Career
1996–2001
Pawan Kalyan entered the Telugu movie industry with Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi as Kalyan Babu. This film was notable for his martial arts action sequences. The film was an average grosser at the boxoffice. After his first movie, his second movie was Gokulamlo Sita. Kalyan was then seen in Gokulamlo Sita which was a remake of the Tamil film Gokulathil Seethai. This movie brought mass image to Pawan Kalyan. This movie completed its 100 day run in 11 theaters and was declared a moderate box office success. His third movie Suswagatham was a super success at the box office. Kalyan's performance and youthful appeal added to its box office success.
In 1998, Tholi Prema released. It initially had average talk but the treatment along with melodious and balanced music by Deva and fresh treatment from debutant director, A. Karunakaran made up for a blockbuster hit run for the movie. The movie also received 6 Nandi Awards and Winner of National Award for the Best Feature Film(Telugu). After Tholiprema, Pawan acted in Thammudu (1999) which was loosely inspired from Aamir Khan's film Jo Jeeta wohi Sikandar with the difference being that Pawan Kalyan played the role of a kickboxer. Pawan Kalyan's energetic performance and music paved its way for a super successful run at the box office. In 2000, he featured in Puri Jagannadh first directorial venture Badri. The film opened to mixed reviews but was a super hit. After Badri, Pawan acted in Khushi (2001) directed by S. J. Surya and the movie went on to become one of the most successful films of Pawan Kalyan. His loverboy-cum-action hero image along with ego clashes between lead pair and music were widely appreciated and the film went on to become the biggest hit of tollywood.
The trade pundits started comparing his box office performance with that of his elder brother Chiranjeevi. Thammudu, Badri, Chiranjeevi's Daddy and Khushi's action sequences were choreographed by Pawan Kalyan which were well appreciated by the audiences and added a new dimension to Kalyan's loverboy image.
2003–present
After the release of Khushi, Pawan Kalyan took a long gap of two years in his film career. He went to Japan for a brief period to learn a martial art called Aikido. He learnt this stunt to use in his first directorial venture Johnny. Despite the poor box office performance, the movie has attracted a cult following for its action scenes. His next releases Gudumba Shankar, Balu ABCDEFG, Bangaram and Annavaram were average grosser at the box office. Pawan Kalyan's pet project Satyagrahi, which he was supposed to direct, got shelved in 2006 due to unstated reasons.
In 2008, Jalsa directed by Trivikram Srinivas released and received good reviews and became one of the biggest hits in his career which collected around Rs 35 crores worldwide and proved profitable to the distributors. The movie went on to become one of the highest grossers in 2008. The music got very good reviews from websites topped the music charts. His subsequent release Puli arrived on 10 September amidst huge expectations because of big names associated with Pawan Kalyan like A.R.Rahman, Binod Pradhan and S. J. Surya but the movie turned out to be a big disappointment but the soundtrack got overwhelming positive reviews and became a hot seller. The audio sales reached a total of 1.6 lakhs of CDs in the first three days, which is an all-time record in Telugu film history.
Pawan Kalyan first release of 2011 was Theenmaar directed by Jayanth C. Paranjee in which he portrayed the two contrasting characters of present and yesteryear generations and he came with superb performance. Given the moderate budget and superb openings, the movie has managed to do a good business and ended up being a commercial and critical success. Following this, Pawan Kalyan appeared in a Vishnuvardhan's gangster flick Panjaa which has been received with mixed response and ended up doing moderate business at the box office.
In September 2011, Pawan began shooting for the movie Gabbar Singh. The movie is being directed by Harish Shankar and produced by Bandla Ganesh.
