J.D. Chakravarthy (born Nagulapati Srinivasa Chakravarthy; Telugu: నగులపతి శ్రీనివాస చక్రవర్తి) is an Indian film actor and director in Telugu cinema and Bollywood. He has directed Hindi films likeDarwaza Bandh Rakho, Durga and Darna Zaroori Hai. In Telugu cinema, he got critical acclaim for his directorial abilities in Homam.[citation needed] He starred in Money, Gulabi, Anaganaga Oka Roju, Premaku Velayara and Satya. Films like Wife of V. Varaprasad, Egire Pavurama, Pape Naa Pranam, Deyyam, Mrugam, Madhyanam Hathya, Vaastu Shastra, and Sarvam gave him critical acclaim as an actor.[citation needed]

Background
Chakravarthy was born to carnatic singer Dr. Santha Kovela (Nagulapati) and Suryanarayana Rao Nagulapati. He did his schooling in St Georges Grammar School, Hyderabad. He is often called J.D. by close friends and known as Chakravarthi by the Telugu film audience.[citation needed]
He debuted in Ram Gopal Verma's debut film Shiva in a negative role as a student named J.D. After that, he played negative, supporting and lead actor roles in Telugu cinema and a supporting role in a Malayalam movie Ennodishtam Koodamo before devoting all his time to films under his mentor's Ram Gopal Verma's direction and production. He starred in a handful of Telugu films directed and/or produced by Ram Gopal Verma and other Telugu directors before Satya, his first Hindi film in a lead role, released in theaters on 3 July 1998. Satya was critically acclaimed, though criticized for its gruesome depiction of violence.[citation needed] It was touted to be one of the best films of Ram Gopal Verma.[citation needed]
[Career
Even though his career started with Shiva, his talent got recognition with Satya in Telugu and Hindi as well.
After Satya, he did a handful of Telugu films including Kasi and Maa Pelliki Randi. His latest film as an actor was Vaastu Shastra, a horror film with Sushmita Sen in Hindi and dubbed in Telugu like most of Verma's Bollywood productions. He also starred in his first Tamil film in 2002 in a supporting role of a Tamil Tiger fighter in Sri Lanka called Dhileepan, who fathers a little girl, in Mani Ratnam's Kannathil Muthamittal. He has returned to Telugu film industry with Homam. He has had a role in director Vishnuvardhan's recent Tamil film Sarvam, starring Arya and Trisha.
